Bette Midler marked her 76th birthday on the set of Disney’s Hocus Pocus 2 by singing songs with the cast and crew. Midler’s glittering career is rooted in music, with the performer cutting her teeth in the New York City musical theatre scene. After chewing up Broadway and subsequently releasing several hit studio albums, Midler made her film debut in 1979’s The Rose. From there, the multi-hyphenate’s full star power was released as she effortlessly transcended mediums.
Midler reached Halloween icon status with Disney’s Hocus Pocus in 1993, which saw her playing the head witch of the Sanderson sisters alongside Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker. Fans were filled with glee when it was announced in 2020 that Midler and her co-leads were returning nearly three decades later for Hocus Pocus 2. With The Proposal director Anne Fletcher at the helm, the production transformed Rhode Island into Salem and has been filming through the fall. Diehard Disney lovers have gathered to catch glimpses at the highly-anticipated Hocus Pocus 2, leaking various sneak peeks online.
Hocus Pocus Guide shared a special moment from a night shoot on Wednesday, December 1. Midler rang in her 76th birthday by tirelessly working on set, but it seems the entire team paused to shower her with love. In true Midler fashion, the cast and crew broke into song to honor their leading lady. Check out the clip, which was originally filmed by @chimply_fun, below:
The video captures the set bursting into “for she’s a jolly good fellow” in the powerhouse’s honor. They end by erupting with applause and roaring cheers for Midler, who appears to say something afterward, though it’s not clear. A consummate performer, she certainly deserves musical praise. At 76-years-old, Midler has been enduring long shoot days, gravity-defying stunts, and flashy musical numbers on the Halloween flick. On top of that, filming during a pandemic has added even more time-consuming protocols to the docket.
Being number one on the call sheet is a grueling process, especially on chilly Rhode Island nights, but the star has powered through. It’s clear Midler is powered by pure passion. No matter the project, she is a talent that seems to remain grateful for getting to live her dream and it shines through her roles. Over the decades since the first Hocus Pocus was filmed, Midler has gushed about her love for playing Winifred and hoped for a follow-up. Now that it’s finally happening, with her two OG sisters in tow, she’s most likely on cloud nine and when Hocus Pocus 2 finally releases on Disney+, fans will float up to cloud nine too.
