Ultimate Halloween Movie Picks by Your Astrological Sign

Three women in elaborate vintage costumes posing together on a stage; left in a burgundy cloak, center in a green gown with orange hair, right in a pink dress with blonde hair.

Here’s a confession: we expected this to be nonsense.

However, a few of us looked up our own Astrological Sign and went quiet.

It turns out the stars have opinions about what you should watch on Halloween night.

Moreover, they’re often right.

The pairings come from Astrological Sign insights from astrologer Katie Robinson’s list for Reader’s Digest. Additionally, the reasoning below is ours, so if you’re a Virgo who can’t stand slashers, take it up with us.

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. Ireland has a better claim to it than most, since Samhain inspired the festival. The full story is in our guide to Halloween’s Irish origins. The tradition blends ancient and modern customs. Its evolution shapes what people expect from Halloween today.

Your Astrological Sign can offer playful clues as you read. So find your birthday below, then sort the snacks and let the universe choose the film. We link birthdays to stories about gifts and choices, connecting temperament with film picks.

Reader’s Digest graphic: the best Halloween movie for each zodiac sign

Aries (21 March – 19 April): Scream (1996)
Patience has never been an Aries strength, and Scream doesn’t ask for any. It goes straight for the jugular, with an opening scene that still sets the bar for horror intros 30 years on. It’s fast, sharp-tongued and fueled by revenge, which is basically Mars-ruled Aries on a good day. Fair warning: clear the weekend, because there’s a whole franchise waiting once you’re hooked.

Taurus (20 April – 20 May): Frankenstein (1931)
Taurus is the sign that will happily wait four hours for a slow roast or a week for a sourdough starter. So a scientist who tries to skip nature’s queue altogether, and gets exactly what’s coming to him, is your kind of entertainment. Start with James Whale’s black-and-white original for the atmosphere and, if you’ve the patience (you do), follow it with Guillermo del Toro’s lavish 2025 version.

Gemini (21 May – 20 June): Hocus Pocus (1993)
Gemini is the social butterfly of the zodiac, and Hocus Pocus is essentially a film about a group chat: three sisters who bicker, scheme and finish each other’s sentences. It’s quick, silly and never takes itself seriously, which suits a sign with a short attention span and a weakness for a good one-liner. Bette Midler’s Winifred Sanderson is the kind of chaotic queen Gemini quietly aspires to be.

Cancer (21 June – 22 July): Halloweentown (1998)
Cancer wants Halloween cozy, not terrifying. Halloweentown delivers a world where witches run the shops, Gran is a sorceress and family is the whole point. Under the pumpkins it’s a story about a girl finding where she belongs and patching things up with her mum, which is pure Cancer. Blanket, hot chocolate, done.

Leo (23 July – 22 August): The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
No prizes for this one. Rocky Horror is glitter, corsets, big numbers and a lead who walks into every scene like he owns the place. You were born for an audience, Leo, so this isn’t really a film night for you, it’s a show, and you’re in it. Expect costumes, expect the Time Warp, and expect to be the one who knows all the words.

Virgo (23 August – 22 September): Halloween (1978)
John Carpenter’s original is a horror film built like a Swiss watch. Michael Myers is patient, methodical and never in a hurry, turning up exactly where he’s meant to, which Virgos will find oddly relatable (minus the knife). The scares live in the details, a figure you only half notice in the background, that relentless piano theme, and Virgo is the sign most likely to spot them first.

Libra (23 September – 22 October): The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Libra, famously, can’t decide. Halloween or Christmas? Why not both. Libra has an eye for beautiful things, and every frame of Henry Selick’s stop-motion classic is a small work of art. Underneath the skeletons and creepy-crawlies, though, it’s a love story, and you’ll want Jack and Sally to end up together from the minute they share the screen. Don’t pretend otherwise.

Scorpio (23 October – 21 November): Beetlejuice (1988)
Happy birthday season, Scorpio. Tim Burton’s afterlife comedy is right up your street: death treated as a bit of admin, a waiting room for the recently deceased, and Lydia Deetz, the goth teenager who’d honestly rather hang out with the ghosts in the attic. You’ve never been squeamish about mortality, and you know what it’s like to be the one nobody quite gets, so Lydia is basically your spirit guide. Just don’t say his name three times.

Sagittarius (22 November – 21 December): Hubie Halloween (2020)
Sagittarius would rather laugh than scream, and Adam Sandler’s Netflix comedy is all giggles and no lasting trauma. Hubie is a well-meaning idiot who patrols Salem every Halloween as if the whole night is his personal responsibility, while the town takes the mick, and somehow he comes out on top. It’s daft, good-natured and doubles as a costume mood board, ideal for the sign most likely to turn up to a party dressed as something nobody can identify.

Capricorn (22 December – 19 January): The Lost Boys (1987)
Leather jackets and eighties hair aren’t the obvious Capricorn look, but stay with us. Capricorn likes to see people get what they deserve, and The Lost Boys is about a gang of teenage vampires who think the party never has to end, until a few kids armed with comic books and holy water prove otherwise. You treat your time like money, so watching a crew fritter away forever on the boardwalk is the scariest part of the whole film.

Aquarius (20 January – 18 February): Alien (1979)
Trust Aquarius to hand in an answer that isn’t on the syllabus. Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror is set about as far from a pumpkin patch as you can get, which is exactly why the sign of space, science and being slightly contrary loves it. The real monster might be the faceless company that sent the Nostromo crew out in the first place. Expect Aquarius to spend half the film terrified and the other half delivering a lecture on corporate ethics.

Pisces (19 February – 20 March): The Craft (1996)
Pisces is the zodiac’s resident mystic, the one who definitely tried to levitate a friend at a sleepover. The Craft follows four teenage outsiders who discover witchcraft and use it to escape their lives, until the magic starts running them. Dreamy, water-ruled Pisces knows the pull of escapism better than anyone, which makes this both a great watch and a gentle warning.
