Consummate performer Bette Midler, who recently released her 25th album, dropped by TODAY Thursday to share a few tunes and explain why she’s living out her girl-group dreams on “It’s the Girls.”

“I had always loved girl groups. … The first record I ever owned was a record by the Boswell Sisters,” she told Matt Lauer. “Most kids want to run away and join the circus; I wanted to run away and join a girl group.”

That’s why “Girls” is packed with covers of some great girl group tunes, including “Be My Baby,” a Ronettes song she performed on the show.

Of course, Midler’s long known exactly what position she would take in any gang of girls: Front and center. When she first fell for the musical style when she was around “14 or 15,” she says, “I was like, ‘Out of my way! I’m singing melody.'”

Clearly, she’s doing something right – Lauer joined her after her first performance to share a little hip sway of his own.

“It’s the Girls” is now available on Amazon and other retailers.
