Paramount Network picks up First Wives Club reboot as half-hour series

Paramount Network’s latest venture is in the form of a new comedy series, “First Wives Club” – 10 half-hour long episodes of which have been picked up from Paramount Television. The blockbuster hit film ‘Girls Trip’ writer, Tracy Oliver, is attached to write and serve as executive producer.

Based on the favorite 1996 film from Paramount Pictures, which featured Diane Keaton, Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn, the half-hour series resembles the movie in its setting, which is New York City. The plot revolves around a group of women who band together after their marriages fall apart, and who find strength in their sisterhood – and of course a little revenge. Read More

HOLLYWOOD (UPI) – Who was the most popular male movie star in the country last year, Kevin Costner or Mel Gibson?

According to the new Movie Channel poll, it was Gibson, despite Costner’s runnaway s u c c e s s in Dancing With Wolves,” iг which he won an Oscar for best director, but not best actor.

For its poll, the Movie Channel canvassed 2,000 people in 14 cities across e country, the ballots containing 55 categories, asking movie buffs to make their choices. Read More

HOLLYWOOD (UPI) – A flock of motion picture and TV stars will appear in the ABC-TV two-hour broadcast of “Time Warner Presents the Earth Day Special,” to generate interest in the ecology movement.

Bette Midler will be seen as Mother Earth attempting to survive today’s onslaught of pollution and waste. The two-hour show will be aired April 22.

Other stars participating are Chevy Chase, Kevin Costner, Ted Danson, Geena Davis, Jane Fonda, Michael Keaton, Meryl Streep, Barbra Streisand, Robin Williams and Bruce Willis. Read More

At a news conference Monday, Kevin Costner, Meryl Streep, Michael Keaton, Barbra Streisand, Bruce Wfllis, Robin Williams, Quincy Jones, Bette Midler and Ted Danson were named as participants in “The Earth Day Special,” a two-hour

In that rather grim concept comedy of 1986 “Ruthless People.” Bette Midler is abducted and held to ransom to the delight of her husband, Danny DeVito, who, hardly believing his luck, refuses to pay as the abductors discount Midler until she has the only funny line: “I’ve been kidnapped by K-Mart!”

What a prophetic line that turned out to be. As most forms of popular entertainment flop or underperform, the celebrity has had to find alternative sources of income. What is so extraordinary is the number of celebrities pushing products, often several simultaneously, like Scarlett Johansson who sells everything but cinema tickets. Advertisements like these were once confined to the Japanese market and contractually quarantined from our prying eyes. Read More
