Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton

Paramount Network’s latest venture is in the form of a new comedy series, “First Wives Club” – 10 half-hour long episodes of which have been picked up from Paramount Television. The blockbuster hit film ‘Girls Trip’ writer, Tracy Oliver, is attached to write and serve as executive producer.

Based on the favorite 1996 film from Paramount Pictures, which featured Diane Keaton, Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn, the half-hour series resembles the movie in its setting, which is New York City. The plot revolves around a group of women who band together after their marriages fall apart, and who find strength in their sisterhood – and of course a little revenge. Read More

7 Life Lessons From ‘The First Wives Club’ You Should Know

The year was 1996 and the women were Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton. The song was Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me.” The movie was an epic ode to female empowerment, and it was called The First Wives Club. Today marks 20 years since its release, and the film’s sarcastic, brilliantly colorful feminist undertones couldn’t be more on point. After being jolted and cheated on, Brenda (Midler), Annie (Keaton), and Elise (Hawn) band together to form a coalition in order to seek justice from their egotistical, manipulative dogs of ex-husbands. It’s irreverent and oh so true, and even if you aren’t a die-hard Gloria Steinem devotee—she even has a cameo in the film—any woman can appreciate the First Wives Club “hear me roar” campaign. Really, you’re not alone if you’ve secretly danced and sung along with the ladies at the end: “And don’t tell me what to do! / And don’t tell me what to say!” Read More

The Underlying Meanness Of The First Wives Club

Remember when we all stopped saying “real women”? I don’t recall which trend piece woke me up to that shift in our cultural lingo, but I do know how fast it clicked. For most of my conscious life, “real women” had been the phrase used to describe women who weren’t models, who seemed relatable rather than aspirational, women who weren’t too hot or too confident but were, you know, normal gals. (And it went without saying that these were probably straight, cis women, too.) Read More

Twenty years ago today, three Hollywood actresses of a certain age teamed up to headline a major studio release and took it to massive popular success. The First Wives Club was a major success story for so many reasons: an original mainstream comedy, a movie about women over 50, a movie that recognized the comedic potential of actresses like Diane Keaton, Bette Midler, and Goldie Hawn … with every year that goes by, the movie seems more and more like a miracle. First Wive’s Club: As the surprise hit comedy turns 20, the message rings louder than the film itself

The First Wives Club and the Unsung Joys of Middle Age

Dusting ‘Em Off is a rotating, free-form feature that revisits a classic album, film, or moment in pop-culture history. This week, Nico Lang revisits hit ’90s comedy The First Wives Club.

A movie can be important, even if it’s not very good. Such is the case with The First Wives Club, a frothy midlife crisis comedy currently celebrating its big 2-0. Starring Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, and Bette Midler, the film debuted in theaters in September 1996, sitting atop the box office for three weeks and topping out at a final gross of $105 million. Its success was sweet vindication following a troubled production. When the film’s original screenwriter, Robert Harling, bailed on the film to direct The Evening Star, a little-remembered sequel to Terms of Endearment, Paul Rudnick (In & Out) was tasked with finishing his script, which he claims “[made] no sense.”
For example, there’s a pivotal scene where Annie Paradis (Keaton) and her best friends from college (Midler and Hawn) visit a gay bar after Annie’s daughter comes out to her mother as a lesbian. Rudnick, who is openly gay, told the New York Times during a 1997 interview that he bristled at the logic of the scene. “OK, but why are they going there?’” Rudnick asked Scott Rudin, the ubiquitous producer behind such films as The Truman Show and No Country for Old Men. Rudin responded, “They’re going to talk to Diane Keaton’s daughter, who is gay.” Rudnick was still confused. “She’s gay, but she doesn’t have a phone?” he shot back. Rudin didn’t care if it adhered to common sense, just as long as it was funny. “Just write it,” he said. Read More

Barbra’s Best Bette (Part 1)

All About Barbra
Barbra’s Best Bette (Part 1)

They are a coupla white chicks sitting around talking…NOT! Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler do anything but sit around. They perform in concerts across the globe. They make movies. They make albums. They write books. They save the environment. And what’s really nice, they support each other’s work. Earlier on, Bette attended the Yentl premiere with tissues in hand and was an honored (and pregnant) invitee at One Voice. More recently, Barbra attended Bette’s play, I’ll Eat You Last, and her latest concert tour, Divine Intervention. Read More
