Liz Smith Reads Bette’s ‘More’ Interview

JUST LOVED Bette Midler, quoted from More magazine in my favorite weekly, The Week. The divine one, taking on another big road tour for 2004, says that male stars like life on the road, but ladies don’t have as much fun.

“On the road, there’s nothing else to do. You can’t get laid . . . we don’t have anywhere near the fun that the guys have. Women can’t pick people up the way men do – you just can’t do it. Women don’t have the capacity for alcohol and drugs that men do.”

(Hmmm . . . I guess Bette forgets that she once starred in the movie “The Rose,” based on the life and adventures of Janis Joplin, a woman who had quite as much “fun” as the men. And tragically paid for it.)

But Miss M. is a married woman and a mother and doesn’t carry on. She recently sat through interviews for VH1’s “Behind the Music,” all about sexual excess, drugs and partying by rock bands. “I think what happened to me was that I had a broken fingernail.”
