In Honor Of Martin Luther King Day

Mister D: I’m certain this came from Bette On The Boards (well it says so on the video), so thank you Darrell, and thank you Jonathan for putting it on You Tube. This is a clip of Bette Midler singing “The Rose” live at the first Martin Luther King Tribute in 1984. You can tell she was thrilled to be there…it had been a few years since she had sung live in public, one of her down periods, but soon she would explode back on the big screen and become a huge moneymaker for Disney/Touchstone.

Here’s 2 songs I recorded (just demos) that I think rather fit the occasion as well. I hope you enjoy. While I’m at it, I just want to say to the “Oprah BetteHead” to have fun tomorrow. Be giddy and happy. I hope things work out the way you hoped they would:

Imagine
written by John Lennon
performed by Mister D

This next one…I love the original…but I gave it a choirboy type interpretation…I don’t know, just felt like I was back in Sunday School with a song that seemed inclusive of everyone. That God was someone who was non-judgemental and accepted everyone….magical thinking on my part according to many….:

God Loves Everyone
written by Ron Sexsmith
performed by Mister D

This is also a good time to remind everyone to try and help Spence’s (Miss Daisy Bucket, pronounced Boo Kay, okay!) cause. He’s doing an AIDS Charity Walk and of course his team is called Team Bucket (yes, another Diva). Their goal is 2000.00. In a short amount of time he’s raised 450.00. Here’s more about the charity –

About our charity: AIDS Service Foundation of Greater Kansas City

The mission of the AIDS Service Foundation is to raise awareness and funding for local AIDS service organizations which provide nutrition, shelter, medical care and emergency services to the women, men and children living with HIV/AIDS in our community. AIDS WALK 2007 marks the 19th year in which individuals, families and friends have come together to go the distance in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Kansas City. We hope you will join us with heart and sole!

  1. I don’t understand why your name doesn’t come up with the video. It seemed in the past, it showed the one who posted. But with the way, You Tube is ripping them down, maybe anonymous is better. I love this clip. I saw this when it first aired and it was so great to see her again. It was during that low point in her career, she hadn’t sung in a while, she was so happy to have been invited, and it was such a meaningful event….

    Love, Don

  2. Hi Don,Just love your version of Imagine, the harmony is beautiful, I am one of Miss M’s biggest fans I’m sure, but I was asked to do a Liza blog for a friend, it’s pretty loaded, check it out when you get the time. I am thinking of doing a similar blog on Bette, I’ll keep you posted.I can never thank you enough for all the work you do and please keep recording, I do visit The Mister D blog you know! There is a song by Van Morrison called Madame George, you might want to listen, if you can’t find it, I will send a file, love your friend Sammy.

  3. Sammy:

Thanks so much for the compliment on my verison of “Imagine” Oddly enough I have such a hard time harmonizing with myself or anyone, but this one came quite easy.

I checked out your Liza blog and loved it. Let me know if and when you do your Bette one…but save some of your wonderful artwork for me….:-)
