Q. I cannot believe that United Artists is willing to pay someone like trashy-flashy Bette Midler $2 million to star in a film. Is that how much she is really getting paid to sing and act in “Jackpot“?–Danny Lee, Honolulu, Hawaii.
A. United Artists is paying Midler $1.75 million plus a profit percentage to star in “Jackpot,” a romantic comedy in which she plays the girlfriend of a Las Vegas gambler. Two years ago, Bette Midler was most impressive in “The Rose,” her motion picture debut. That film did well at the box office. United Artists hopes “Jackpot” will do equally well.
