I no longer cared about the Emmy’s, when Bette lost the Emmy for “Gypsy” to Kirstie Alley for “David’s Mother”. One way I try to decide who is most deserving of an award is to play casting director. If Kirstie were offered the role of “Mama Rose” in Gypsy, could she pull it off? If Bette were offered the role of playing the mother of an autistic child, as Kirstie did, could she pull it off? To me, the stretch of an actress is to be convincing and versatile. Bette clearly portrayed Mama Rose better than anyone in Hollywood. Many actresses could have done what Kirstie Alley did. After the travesty of Bette’s loss (only one win for Gypsy out of 16 Emmy nominations), to me the Emmy Awards has never been the same. One big “meh”. Sorry to sidetrack, but this clip jogged my memory on how phenomenal Bette’s performance was in Gypsy–untouchable in my opinon.
Wonderful!!
Thanks Eze!
Eric K’s friend here in Hollywood wishing you all the best for the holiday.
Much love!
