Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler gear up for battles on both the big screen and the record charts this winter.
Both plan record releases f r om their u p c omi ng movies. Midler’s “For The Boys” album will feature tunes from the picture, in which she plays a USO singer, while Ms. Streisand plans at least two new songs for a “Prince of Tides” album.
I don’t know how well the soundtrack albums for The Prince of Tides and For The Boys sold. But talking about the films’ box-office, The Prince of Tides overshadowed Miss M’s movie by a mile: a little more than 23 million against 110 million for TPOT.
On the awards front, each movie got a Golden Globe: Nick Nolte got Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama and The Divine Miss M received Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy/Musical (She gave a heartfelt speach at the Globes gala and got emotional. I so wanted to hug her then).
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science offered many more nominations to TPOT than the one given to FTB. Both pictures got no Oscars. The Tides soundtrack lost to Disney’s Beauty and the Beast; Tides also lost to The Silence of the Lambs as Best Film (this particular Oscar was handed by Paul Newman and Dame Elizabeth Taylor) and The Divine One lost to Jodie Foster. Indeed Alan Menken originated greater score and songs, but Bette should have won over Foster.
I don’t think Miss M and Streisand are willing to produce or direct, in Barbra’s case, another film. It’s a very risky business and, above all, lots and lots of work. Which is a pity for they both are incredible creative forces.
I so want more movies with The Divine One. I have each and everyone of her motion pictures which I love to watch to. I also really want one or two Oscars for her. If one takes in consideration that Christopher Plummer got his Oscar at 82, Miss M has time for hers.
FTB soundtrack went gold. Not sure about Pot….
