BetteBack June 19, 1992: Liz Smith On Bette’s Johnny Appearance – Brilliant!

Daily Herald Suburban Chicago
June 19, 1992

By the by, this issue of TV Guide is the annual “Best and Worst” edition (you can make of it what you will regarding Perot’s significant appearance therein), and I was happy to see Bette Midler‘s guesting on Johnny Carson‘s next-to last-show rated among “The Best. “This was one of television’s great outings.

Midler is a brilliant, spontaneous performer, the genuine heir to those legends of the live stage – Sophie Tucker, AI Jolson, Judy Garland – and, as Carson’s final guest, she soared.

Bette may have missed out on Oscar recently, but I think Emmy will come knocking at her door pretty soon.
