With singer and actress Bette Midler leading the way, thousands of people set out on a tour of Milwaukee’s Lake Michigan shore in beautiful weather for AIDS Walk Wisconsin.

The crowd of 12,614 Sunday turned in pledges that pushed the total dollars raised to just over $1 million, organizers said. The money goes for 17 agencies involved in AIDS care, prevention, research and advocacy.

“After 15 years, many tire of the battle against AIDS, but not in Milwaukee,” Midler said in opening ceremonies, adding she was proud to stand among those helping to fight the deadly disease.
