Bette Midler Sings The National Anthem (January 1, 2002)

I’m no expert on versions of The Star Spangled Banner. but this is probably the most original version I have ever heard that captured the sadness and the hope after 9/11 – The 3 part harmony laid over the minor chords, very unusual, and Bette’s plaintive yet emotional take was just perfect for the times. No one else could have accomplished that.
