On this day in 1979, 20TH CENTURY FOX released THE ROSE. Directed by MARK RYDELL, this rock and roll roman a clef starred BETTE MIDLER in a very JANIS JOPLIN-like role that won the hearts of audiences and critics alike. MIDLER gives an amazing performance as do supporting cast members ALAN BATES and FREDRIC FOREST. One of the great rock musicals.
