By the by, this issue of TV Guide is the annual “Best and Worst” edition (you can make of it what you will regarding Perot’s significant appearance therein), and I was happy to see Bette Midler‘s guesting on Johnny Carson‘s next-to-last-show rated among “The Best “This was one of television’s great outings.
Midler is a brilliant, spontaneous performer, the genuine heir to those legends of the live stage – Sophie Tucker, Al Jolson. Judy Garland – and, as Carson’s final guest, she soared. Bette may have missed out on Oscar recently, but I think Emmy will come knocking at her door pretty soon.
