Helen Hunt’s feature directorial debut opens with klezmer clarinet and a Jewish wedding. April Epner (Hunt), a New York City teacher is finally marrying her nebbishy groom ”“ played perfectly by Matthew Broderick. Then She Found Me, adapted from Elinor Lipman’s novel, quickly turns into an account of April’s mid-life crisis; her husband leaves, her adoptive mother dies the next day, and she is desperately sad that she doesn’t have children of her own. Amidst all of these heartbreaking events, April’s birth mother Bernice (Bette Midler) surfaces unexpectedly and adds even more confusion to April’s life. She finds comfort in an unorthodox relationship with the single father of one of her students (Colin Firth), in this wonderfully human examination of life, warts and all.
