Bette Midler Hosts Annual Spring Picnic Benefit
June 2, 2014
NO DISHING AT BETTE’S: Amy Poehler, Isaac Mizrahi, Cynthia Nixon, Marlo Thomas, Liz Smith and Tim Gunn provided some of the laughs that Mayor Bill de Blasio, his wife Chirlane McCray and other supporters enjoyed Thursday night at Bette Midler’s annual spring picnic benefit for New York’s Restoration Project.
While the mayor and his wife chatted up attendees before dinner was served, they waved off reporters, as did their substantial security and public relations detail. Midler was more at ease with the talkative crowd. Dressed in a navy caftan top and white pants, Glorious Food founder Sean Driscoll, whose company served up the dinner, told Midler, “Killer party and killer shoes.”
“You gotta have both,” she said with a laugh.
“The Halloween [costume party] event we have is much more stressful than this,” Midler said. “This is a pah-ty. Halloween is like, ‘Oh my God – not this again.’ It happens so fast.”
Having started his company in 1971, Driscoll has seen his share of memorable nights though he was not about to spill any of his favorite stories. “That’s why I am alive today – nobody knows them,” he said.
