Lady Gaga’s recent wheelchair-riding performance brought the ire of handicapped groups, angry bloggers and now, Bette Midler.
But Midler has a different bone to pick. She claims Gaga’s controversial act was actually stolen from her.
The actress-singer took to Twitter over the weekend to confront the pop star.
“I’m not sure @ladygaga knows that I’ve performed my mermaid in a wheelchair for millions of people – and many of them are still alive. …” Midler tweeted, referring to Gaga’s ewest character, Yuyi the goth mermaid.
“Dear @ladygaga I’ve been doing singing mermaid in a wheelchair since 1980 –You can keep the meat dress and the firecracker tits – mermaid’s mine” she continued in her rant. “Dear @ladygaga if you think a mermaid in a wheelchair seems familiar – it’s because it is! You can see it on youtube 24/7 – with ME performing it.”
True to tweet, YouTube videos from as early as the ’80s show a colorful Midler as Delores DeLago, her own mermaid as a wheelchair stage personality.
“To this day [Bette] regrets never saying anything in the early ’80s when Madonna replaced her as the queen of vulgar without ever crediting her,” one source close to Midler told Huffington Post. “Now she’s had enough and needed to speak out. If it wasn’t for Bette there would be no Madonna and if it wasn’t for Madonna we would have no Lady Gaga.”
But by Sunday night, Midler was ready to make amends.
“@ladygaga, let’s drink this over at the Emmys in September,” Midler tweeted. “Fabulous mermaids can coexist!”
