Bette Midler and CBS are close to a deal for a three hour TV production of the musical comedy “Gypsy.”

An agreement should be signed by Friday, producer Craig Zadnn said Wednesday.

The movie would star Ms. Midler as brassy stage mother Mama Rose, the role originally played by Ethel Merman on Broadway and by Rosalind Russell in the 1962 movie.

The role of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee has yet to be cast. The movie would air next season.
