The Associated Press has won 31 Pulitzer prizes for photography since the award was established in 1917. Each day we offer a curated collection of some of the best AP images that were taken from that date. Not all of these photos were prize winners, but each of them is certainly tells a story.
1932: Los Angeles Olympics

1942: CHICAGO TURNS OFF THE LIGHT

1954: WILLIAM FAULKNER
William Faulkner, author, is pictured at work at his typewriter on August 12, 1954. Faulkner’s novels have won prizes and distinction in his own country and outside. He received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1949. In 1955 he won the Pulitzer Prize for his novel “A Fable”, which also took other American awards. (AP Photo)
1955: Hurricane Connie
Motorists take it easy through this underpass at Queens Blvd., and Horace Harding Blvd., Aug. 12, 1955, Long Island, New York. New York City was hit by Hurricane Connie, causing the heaviest rains of the year. The weather bureau reported 4.61-inches during a 17-hour period beginning at 8 p.m., Aug. 11. 1959: Civil Rights Integration
This is the spearhead of riot-bound demonstrators as they left the state capitol en route to Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., Aug. 12, 1959. Many of the demonstrators were arrested after violence erupted two blocks from the high school, and several were drenched with water from fire hoses. 1963: Protests

He was one in a group of 15 whites and African Americans who were arrested following picketing against a local mobile school project. 1966: Beatlemania protest
The Beatles went up in smoke near Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., on August 12, 1966 as neighborhood youngsters severed once and for all their two–year friendship with the four world figures. The Beatlemania bonfire, planned by Chuck Smith, 13, was in protest against John Lennon remark to the effect that the Beatles are “more popular than Jesus.” (AP Photo)
1966: Viet Cong Prisoners
American Marines of the 1st Batt./5th Marines relax the morning after an all night battles against an estimated Viet Cong regiment. 1977: Son of Sam

1978: Hollywood
