MTV at 30: A Look at a Modern Music Revolution in Numbers

MTV’s first broadcast was Aug. 1, 1981. With the words “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll,” a television network that inspired an entire generation was started. Thousands of music videos, wild hair, outrageous stunts and 30 years later, MTV is still relevant in a world of Internet downloads, instant messaging and iPods.
Here’s a look at MTV by the numbers, just in time for its 30th anniversary.
9/14/1984: The first date of the Video Music Awards . The statue given to the winners was also the logo used in the “moon broadcast” photograph of an astronaut holding the American flag on the surface of the moon. The best video winner in 1984 was “You Might Think” by the cars. Madonna gave a live performance of “Like a Virgin” on stage for fans. The first hosts were Bette Midler and Dan Akroyd.
8.4 million: The number of people who tuned into watch the premiere of “Jersey Shore” and its third season. At the time, it was MTV’s highest rated non-music event in its history. The Hollywood Gossip reported MTV’s show surpassed many others in terms of popularity.
11.94 million: The number of viewers for the 2002 Video Music Awards. It might have been that MTV featured a tribute to Michael Jackson and had other big-name stars such as Britney Spears, Eminem and Van Halen. The show also featured Justin Timberlake’s first solo performance of his career.
95.7 million: The amount of subscribers in the United States with access to the music channel. The Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau states MTV was the number one rated network among college students in 2007. Many of MTV’s programs migrated away from music-themes and branched into reality television programming such as “The Real World,” “The Hills” and “Teen Mom.”
411.7 million: The number of households , in 164 territories, that MTV reaches on a daily basis. MTV is owned by Viacom, the owner of CBS, VH1 and Nickelodeon among many others.
25: The number of seasons for “The Real World” which was originally launched in 1992. MSNBC reported MTV has renewed its longest-running show at least through season 28. The format follows complete strangers thrown together in a living situation for various months. Sometimes, “The Real World” intentionally puts people of differing beliefs and backgrounds together to see how they do. Places such as New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, and Las Vegas have hosted the show.
11: The most MTV Movie Awards won by one person over an entire career. Comedian Jim Carrey has won the most Golden Popcorn trophies. The most won by one woman is six for Kristen Stewart thanks to her role on the “Twilight” series of films. The MTV Movie Awards have been an annual staple since 1992 on the network.
No matter what numbers you examine, MTV is a beloved network that has evolved in 30 years to stay relevant to its audiences.
