SPECIAL. “BETTE MIDLER – OL! RED IS BACK.” In her first television special, the divine Bette Midler manages to offer a show that’s cut above the average, because she ignores sketches and the customary quota of phoniness and sweetness, and sings.
Clown Emmett Kelly works alongside the lady, and Dustin Hoffman makes an appearance playing a song he wrote 20 years ago. Bette Midler doesn’t try anything fancy, sticking with the oldies, which shouldn’t disappoint her following.
