Songwriting great Jerry Herman is busy making alterations in his time honored “Mame ” musical–as the next CBS TV musical “event” to star Bette Midler.
According to producer Robert Halmi, Herman’s doing some fine-tailoring of the piece for Midler and “updating it a bit.” Midler and Halmi started talking about doing “Mame” for TV right on the heels of her success with “Gypsy!” in March, he says.
“The character is just perfect for Bette.” Plans now call for Midler’s “Mame ” to go before the cameras in January Meanwhile, Halmi already has scouts checking out possible locations for the gala Nov. 1 premiere of his “Scariett” miniseries in New York.
