Bette Midler fans were shocked to see the legend’s name spelled wrong on the marquee at the Shubert Theatre for her upcoming revival of Broadway’s “Hello, Dolly!” on Wednesday.
“They spelled her name without the last ‘e’!” squealed a shocked onlooker.
But the legions who love the “Beaches” star can relax — the theater insists that the sign was still in the process of being put up, and has since been fixed.
“We are quite sure there is not a soul within a 15-block radius of Shubert Alley that doesn’t know the exact proper spelling of Ms. Midler’s name,” a rep for the play told us, adding, “You’ll be happy to know that both ‘e’s in Bette are finally back where they belong.”
The show begins previews on March 15, with David Hyde Pierce co-starring and four-time Tony winner Jerry Zaks directing. The highly anticipated show has not been staged on the Great White Way since 1996.
