Broadway’s ‘Hello, Dolly!’ Closes With Broken Records, Trickling Profits

Broadway’s ‘Hello, Dolly!’ Closes With Broken Records, Trickling Profits

So long dearie, hello profits. Sort of.

The Tony-winning revival of Hello, Dolly! concluded this weekend, after an unprecedented run. Original star Bette Midler returned for the final weeks, elevating grosses back to eye-watering levels, with a final frame tally of $2.34 million. During her initial award-winning stint, the show broke its own box office record twelve times.

But for a hit that grossed $128.19 million (more than any revival in Broadway history not called Chicago), some investors have been grumbling. While the production recouped its $15.9 million investment last winter, a detailed report of its finances disclosed that backers only made 5% on their buy-in as of last week. Read More

Ms. Buckley, dubbed “The Voice of Broadway,” joins the astonishing list of show business luminaries who have inhabited the role, including Carol Channing, Pearl Bailey, Phyllis Diller, Betty Grable, Martha Raye, Ginger Rogers, Ethel Merman, in her last appearance on Broadway, Mary Martin, who led the West End company, and most recently in this celebrated new production, Bette Midler, Donna Murphy, and Bernadette Peters.

Led by four-time Tony Award-winning director Jerry Zaks and choreographed by Tony Award winner Warren Carlyle, the entire creative team of the Broadway production will reprise their roles for the national tour of Hello, Dolly!, including four-time Tony Award winner Santo Loquasto (Scenic & Costume Design), six-time Tony Award winner Natasha Katz (Lighting Design), Tony Award winner Scott Lehrer (Sound Design), Andy Einhorn (Music Direction), Tony Award winner Larry Hochman (Orchestrations), Tony Award winner Don Pippin (Vocal Arrangements), David Chase (Dance Arrangements), and Telsey + Company (Casting).

This Hello, Dolly!, the first new production of the classic musical (based on Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker) to appear on Broadway since it opened more than fifty years ago, pays tribute to the work of its original director/choreographer Gower Champion, which has been hailed both then and now as one of the greatest stagings in musical theater history.

How To Avoid The Crowds At “Hello Dolly!” With Bette Midler

New York Post
How to avoid the crowds at these NYC hotspots
by Johnny Oleksinski
July 11, 2018

Julieta Cervantes

The hot mess: Insane crowds at “Hello, Dolly!” on Broadway are a sure Bette. That’s because its Tony Award-winning star, Bette Midler, is returning to the musical for just six weeks starting July 17. During her first stint, tickets went for as much as $800 and performances were always sold out — leading to hordes of people waiting for cancellation seats all day. “The Midler lines at the Shubert are always long and lively,” PR man Rick Miramontez tells The Post. Even wilder are the fans waiting to bask in the glow of the Divine Miss M post-show. “Bette at the stage door is one of the great Broadway events,” Miramontez says.

Pro tip: Midler is fab, but she’s just one part of a sensational production. To give the star a break, actress Donna Murphy will play the lead role for just five performances (July 22 and 29, and Aug. 5, 12, 19 and 20). Tickets to Murphy’s shows will be cheaper, there will be more availability and you’ll have a good old-fashioned blast. Shubert Theatre, 225 W. 44th St.; tickets at Telecharge.com or 212-239-6200

Back Where They Belong! Tony Award winners and original cast members Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce return to their respective roles of Dolly Levi Gallagher and Horave Vandergelder in the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly! at the Shubert Theatre tonight. The pair are scheduled to remain with the production for the final six weeks of its acclaimed Broadway run through to August 25, 2018.

Two-time Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters and four-time Tony Award nominee Victor Garber both played their final performances in the revival on July 15.

Ms. Midler previously released the following statement: “I am delighted to return to the scene of one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I know the brilliant Bernadette Peters enjoyed her turn as much as I did. Dolly Levi is one of the most joyful characters in Broadway history, and Bernadette and I were lucky to to be able to step into her glorious shoes.”

The principal cast of Hello, Dolly! currently includes Tony Award winner Bette Midler (as Dolly Levi Gallagher), Tony Award winner David Hyde Pierce (as Horace Vandergelder), Tony Award winner Gavin Creel (as Cornelius Hackl), Olivier Award nominee Charlie Stemp (as Barnaby Tucker), Tony Award nominee Kate Baldwin (as Irene Molloy), Molly Griggs (as Minnie Fay), Will Burton (as Ambrose Kemper), Melanie Moore (as Ermengarde), and Alli Mauzey (as Ernestina).

The Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly! began previews on March 15, 2017, and officially opened on April 20.

The classic musical features a book by Michael Stewart, with music & lyrics by Jerry Herman.

Directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, this production features choreography by Tony Award winner Warren Carlyle, based on the original work by Gower Champion.

Synopsis: “At the turn of the 20th century, all of New York City is excited because widowed but brassy Dolly Gallagher Levi is in town. Dolly makes a living primarily through matchmaking and is currently seeking a wife for grumpy Horace Vandergelder, the well-known half-a-millionaire, but it becomes clear that Dolly intends to marry Horace herself.”

The creative team aslo features scenic & costume design by Santo Loquasto, lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Scott Lehrer, music direction by Andy Einhorn, orchestrations by Larry Hochman, vocal arrangements by Don Pippin, and dance arrangements by Glen Kelly.

At the 71st Annual Tony Awards, the production took home the trophy for “Best Revival of a Musical,” as well as “Best Costume Design of a Musical,” “Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical” (for Gavin Creel) and “Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical” (for Bette Midler).

Hello, Dolly! first premiered on Broadway at the St James Theatre in 1964, picking up a grand total of 10 Tony Awards, including “Best Musical.” It has since been revived three times – 1975 at the Minskoff Theatre, and 1978 and 1995 both at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. A film adaptation was released in 1969, directed by Gene Kelly and starring Barbra Streisand.

A National Tour, starring Tony Award-winning legend Betty Buckley, launches at the Connor Palace at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 2, 2018.

Hello, Dolly! Tickets are available now for performances through to August 25, 2018.

Broadway B.O. Leaps Even As ‘Lion King’ & ‘Wicked’ Feel Winter Chill

Deadline Hollywood
Broadway B.O. Leaps Even As ‘Lion King’ & ‘Wicked’ Feel Winter Chill
by Jeremy Gerard
January 16, 2018 2:06pm

With the three-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend as a spur, the Broadway box office defied the January trend, pole-vaulting 27% over the same week in 2017 and even surpassing the previous week by 2%. All that despite some staggering nose-dives among the family-friendly crowd.

That includes Disney’s two shows: The Lion King was off $681K from the previous week at the Nederlander Organization’s Minskoff Theatre, while Aladdin, installed at the Mouse’s New Amsterdam flagship, skidded nearly a quarter-million dollars. It wasn’t a great week for Andrew Lloyd Webber, either: The Phantom of the Opera, tagging the 30-year mark at the Shubert Organization’s Majestic Theatre, fell a chandelier-swinging $371K, while School of Rock, at the Shuberts’ Winter Garden, was off $193K. Wicked, at the Nederlanders’ Gershwin, was off $280K from the week before.

A sizable chunk of the $7 million increase over the year before can be attributed to Bruce Springsteen, who’d taken the week after New Year’s off; his return to Jujamcyn Theatres’ Walter Kerr added $2.4 million back into the pot. Bette Midler’s farewell week in Hello, Dolly! at the Shubert was up $230K, while the Steve Martin comedy Meteor Shower and star Amy Schumer, at the Shuberts’ Booth, added $246K to its coffers.

In addition to Midler making way for Bernadette Peters to step into her red gown beginning this Saturday night, there were two other noteworthy departures: Javier Muñoz, the original replacement for Lin-Manuel Miranda in the title role of Hamilton, bowed out after an acclaimed run, as did Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, whose closing despite continued good business in the $1-million club still left some scratching their heads, ended its run at the Nederlanders’ Lunt-Fontanne.

The five top-grossing musicals were:

• Hamilton ($3.1 million at the Nederlanders’ Richard Rodgers; $288.61 average ticket)

• Hello, Dolly! ($2.43 million at the Shubert; $236.78)

• Springsteen On Broadway ($2.41 million for 5 performances at Jujamcyn’s Walter Kerr; $508.68)

• The Lion King ($1.94 million at the Nederlanders’ Minskoff; $143.17)

• Dear Evan Hansen ($1.74 million at the Shuberts’ Music Box; 217.83)

The five top-grossing plays were:

• Meteor Shower ($935.5K at the Shuberts’ Booth; $148.07 )

• Farinelli and the King ($868K at the Shuberts’ Belasco; $105.42 average ticket)

• Latin History For Morons ($525K for 7 performances at the Roundabout’s Studio 54; $91.48)

• The Parisian Woman ($462.6K at the Ambassador Theatre Group’s Hudson; $71.46)

• The Play That Goes Wrong ($418.6 at the Shuberts’ Lyceum; $77.03)

Ticket sales for Week 34 of the 2017-2018 Broadway season totaled $32.95 million for 29 shows, according to the trade group Broadway League. That was an increase of 2% or $290K over the week before ($32.2 million) and 27 % or $7 million over the same week in 2017. Average ticket price was $132.30, up from $126.21 last week and $114.77 a year ago.
