Q. and A. With Stuart Elliott

Q. This is in reference to the campaign you wrote about for Cape Cod kettle-cooked potato chips, which includes a commercial featuring the song “I Ran” by A Flock of Seagulls.
I’m probably dating myself, but whatever happened to the song “Old Cape Cod,” with the line “You’re sure to fall in love with old Cape Cod”? It probably doesn’t do as well on Facebook or Twitter. Ah, well …
A. Thanks, dear reader, for the stroll down memory lane. But as you surmised, the target audience probably does not recall the version of “Old Cape Cod” by Bette Midler, released in 1976, much less the original version from 1957, sung by Patti Page.
This is such a Bette related moment that only other Betteheads could appreciate: After listening to Bette’s Old Cape Cod for 15 years, I finally went to Cape Cod. I took a solo walk to an empty beach, laid down in the sand, facing the ocean, plugged in my ipod and listened to her sing this song. I know this is a tad sensitive but it brought me to tears…Every time I hear that song I think of that special day.
Sounds like a beautiful and tranquil time in your life. I think i’ll give it a listen tonight!
