X FACTOR contestant Christopher Maloney today told how he was geed up for tonight’s live show thanks to some celebrity backing.

The Kirkdale singer has grabbed the attention of American singer and actress Bette Midler.

Christopher’s version of her classic The Rose, which he performed for his initial tryout in Liverpool, has had 3.8m hits on YouTube.

Former Beaches star Bette watched the audition online and has thrown her weight behind the hopeful.

She wrote: “Just saw the incredible triumph of @ChrisMaloney77 on @TheXFactor UK singing The Rose”¦congratulations! Keep it up!!”

Christopher, 34, said: “She sent me a message saying she had just watched my performance and she called it a triumph.

“She congratulated me and told me to keep up the good work. It was just amazing, especially because she’s such a legend.

“She’s based in New York and she saw it on YouTube. I still can’t believe it.

“She’s known in all four corners of the Earth. So it’s amazing that people from all over the world have read what she said about me.”

Christopher, who chose the song after it was played at his grandad Jimmy’s funeral, said: “That song means so much to me so it makes it even more heartfelt.

“I heard rumours that since my X Factor audition The Rose may be re-released so we’ll see.”

Christopher said the star’s praise had boosted his confidence after recent claims he was different off camera.

He said: “It’s an emotional rollercoaster. I entered the competition because I wanted to build up my confidence and do the best I can and make my family and Liverpool proud.

“Some of the comments have knocked my confidence a little bit, but I’m going to do my best for my mentor Gary [Barlow].”

Meanwhile Yoko Ono offered her support to X Factor’s Jahmene Douglas after his rendition of John Lennon’s Imagine.
