Bette Midler Returning to ‘Hello, Dolly!’ to Close Out the Broadway Revival
Posted: 10:10 AM, April 20, 2018
Bette Midler couldn’t stay away from the “lights of 14th street.”
The Tony Award winner will return to the title role she originated in the current revival of Hello, Dolly! Her former co-star, David Hyde Pierce, who played Horace Vandergelder, will join her in the limited six-week engagement from July 17 to August 25, when the show will close.
“I am delighted to return to the scene of one of the greatest experiences of my life,” Midler said in a statement of her triumphant encore performance.
Bernadette Peters, who took over for Bette Midler in January will conclude her luminous run as Dollyon July 15, and hand back over that famous red dress. “I am enjoying myself and the audience is enjoying it. It’s just wonderful to be such an iconic wonderfully written role,” the three-time Tony Award winner told ET on her opening night.
The revival of Jerry Herman’s 1964 musical has been a monster hit at the box office, though ticket sales have taken a dip since Midler left the show. During her final week in January, the show raked in a remarkable $2.4 million, thanks in part to premium ticket sales, while sales for the week ending April 15 came in just over $1 million, still nearly three quarters the potential gross for the theater.
Replacing Pierce was Victor Garber, who told ET he jumped at the chance to be reunited with Peters. “It’s what you call a no-brainer,” he said.
Hello, Dolly! opened on Broadway one year ago on April 20, 2017.
The first national tour of Hello, Dolly! kicks off October 2, 2018 in the Connor Palace at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, Ohio, starring another Tony Award-winning legend, Betty Buckley.
Tickets for the performances at which Ms. Midler is appearing will go on sale at 10 a.m., Eastern time, on April 28.
