Bette Midler hopes to bring as much brass to the role of late superagent Sue Mengers in an upcoming Broadway play as the real-life character did making Hollywood deals.
“She was not a star in the conventional sense, but in her world she was a star,” says Midler, who plays Mengers in “I’ll Eat You Last,” in April’s Vanity Fair.
“She was kicked to the curb. But she did not compromise. She did what the [bleep] she wanted to do. I wish I had those balls.”
Mengers repped Ali MacGraw, Barbra Streisand, Burt Reynolds and Cybill Shepherd. Midler will portray the chain-smoking Mengers on a couch for 90 minutes each night at the Booth Theatre starting April 24.
According to Vanity Fair, Mengers, who died of pneumonia in 2011, dictated her funeral arrangements to her friends in dramatic fashion: Paramount boss Brad Grey’s wife Cassandra flew her ashes by private jet to Paris where she, MacGraw, Boaty Boatwright and Sherry Lansing combined them with those of her late husband Jean-Claude Tramont and scattered them into the Seine.
“There were a lot of ashes,” Boatwright told the mag, adding, “Let’s face it. Sue was a big girl, and Jean-Claude was tall.”
