Bette Midler, 27, is a native of Hawaii. She went to New York in the middle 60s as a hopeful actress and won the role of Tzeitel in ” Fiddler on the Roof.”

After three years, she started scouting elsewhere. One night she went with a friend to a small nightclub in New York that functioned as a tune in show case for undiscovered talent.

She got up and sang a couple of songs that got polite response of the audience. Then she did “God Bless the Child” and “it was like a thunderbolt,”  she said. “I felt the lyrics and I didn’t hold anything back. I was screaming at the end of it.”

She made a few club appearances, was on the Johnny Carson show and went on to play Las Vegas with Carson. The rest, as they say, is history
