‘Gypsy’ Movie To Be Remade For The Big Screen. Why, Oh Why?

Variety
‘Gypsy’ Movie Revived by ‘Mrs. Maisel’ Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino
By DAVE MCNARY
FEBRUARY 6, 2019

Photo: Bette Midler as Mama Rose in Gypsy

Amy Sherman-Palladino, creator and showrunner of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” is in talks to direct a remake of “Gypsy.”

New Regency is on board to finance with Joel Silver producing. STX Entertainment had agreed in 2016 to finance Barbra Streisand’s proposed remake of “Gypsy,” but backed out a few months later.

“Gypsy” tells the story of the burlesque legend Gypsy Rose Lee, based on her 1957 memoir about her career and hard-as-nails stage mother. That book served as the inspiration for the highly successful 1959 musical, starring Ethel Merman, with popular songs including “Everything’s Coming up Roses,” “Small World,” “Let Me Entertain You” and “All I Need Is the Girl.” ...  Read More

Audio: God Bless The Outcasts From The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, As Sung By Bette Midler

Bette Midler sings Baby It;s You In The Studio

God Help The Outcasts
(Stephen Schwarz, Alan Menken)

I don't know if you can hear me
Or if you're even there
I don't know if You will listen
To a humble prayer
They tell me I'm just an outcast
I shouldn't speak to You
Still I see your face and wonder
Were you once an outcast too?
God help the outcasts
Hungry from birth
Show them the mercy
They don't find on earth
The lost and forgotten
They look to you still
God help the outcasts
Or nobody will
I ask for nothing
I can get by
But I know so many
Less lucky then I
God help the outcasts
The poor and downtrod
I thought we all were
The children of God
I don't know if there's a reason
Why some are blessed, some not
Why the few you seem to favor
They fear us
Flee us
Try not to see us
God help the outcasts
The tattered, the torn
Seeking an answer
To why they were born
Winds of misfortune
Have blown them about
You made the outcasts
Don't cast them out
The poor and unlucky
The weak and the odd
I thought we all were
The children of God ...  Read More

Bette Midler’s Long Time Friend, Composer, Lyricist, Marc Shaiman Is To Receive The Icon Music Supervisor Reward (Video: Bette and Marc)

By JORDAN MOREAU

Bette Midler and Marc Shaiman last year, probably Talking about Trump LOL

Composer and lyricist Marc Shaiman will be honored with the Icon Award at the ninth annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards, taking place Feb. 13 at the Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles.

The “Hairspray” and “Smash” tunesmith will be performing “The Place Where Lost Things Go,” the “Mary Poppins Returns” ballad he co-wrote with Scott Wittman, at the ceremony. “Lost Things” is nominated for the original song Oscar, and he’s also up for composing the score for the Disney sequel. Winning either would give Shaiman an EGOT, since he already claims an Emmy, Grammy and Tony.

Also performing at the show is Aimee Mann, who’ll sing “Drive,” a song from “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” that’s up for a guild award in the song for TV category. Lukas Nelson, one of the musical forces behind “A Star Is Born,” will perform a yet-to-be-announced selection from among the songs he worked on for that soundtrack.

The event celebrates achievements in music supervision, recognizing work in 18 categories in movies, television, games, advertising and trailers.

As previously announced, Joel Sill will be given the Legacy Award. Presenters include women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred, director Taylor Hackford, actor Rafael Casal and director Rob Morrow.

“Marc Shaiman’s work has withstood the test of time,” said Thomas Golub?, president of the Guild of Music Supervisors, in a statement. “Because of his songs, cultural sensations such as ‘Hairspray’ and ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ have resonated deeply with audiences spanning generations. We are honored to celebrate Marc’s contributions to the industry as he accepts the prestigious Icon Award at this year’s show.”

Here’s a little rarity of Marc Shaiman serenading Bette Midler on her 60th Birthday at Hulaween in 2005. Thanks to Marc for sending me the lyrics

BETTE 60TH @ HULAWEEN
(Special Lyrics Written By Marc Shaiman)

IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE BETTE MIDLER'S 60
WHEN THERE'S HARDLY A LINE UPON YOUR FACE
I WAS A CHILD WHEN YOU FOUND FAME
(SO EXPLAIN TO ME HOW
I'M FAT AND OLD, YET YOU'RE THE SAME

WE KNOW HOW YOU FIGHT TO MAKE THINGS BETTER
BUT DOES ANYONE EVER WIPE YOUR BROW?
AND OFFER A HUG, PERHAPS A KISS?
(I HOPE THEY DO)

AND I HOPE YOU NEVER FORGET THIS!
THAT EVERYONE HERE THINKS YOU'RE A HERO
YOU'RE JUST WHAT OUR PRESIDENT SHOULD BE
YOU MAKE US FLY HIGH AMONGST THE EAGLES
CAUSE YOU ARE THE WIND BENEATH OUR WINGS

GOD BLESS YOU
FOR YOU ARE THE WIND BENEATH OUR WINGS

Sophie Von Haselberg And Her Friend Ariana Venturi Have A Podcast! Check It Out!

Podcast: Having A Night With Sophie & Ari (And You Can Listen To Them Here!)

Podcast: Having A Night with Sophie Von Haselberg and Ariana Venturi

You know that thing when you’re invited to a dinner party at your friend’s house? And maybe you had a really stressful day and you don’t want to go at all. Plus your favorite show just premiered a new season and you have a credit in your Seamless account due to a dumpling situation gone awry. But once you get there, something inexplicably magical happens: you have the best time ever. Maybe it’s the food, maybe it’s the booze, maybe it’s the company, but there is definitely an element of je nais sais quoi that makes getting-off-your-couch-mid-TV-binge totally worth it. (Hint: it was at least partly the food.) It’s the kind of party that makes you waltz into work the next day and announce loudly to your coworkers: “Well, I just had A NIGHT.” ...  Read More

Bette Midler and Marcia Gay Harden at Arbor Day Celebration

Marcia Gay Harden revealed that things don’t always go as planned when filming, like the time Diane Keaton hit her with a foam bat in “First Wives Club.”

In an episode of “Couch Surfing,” the “Code Black” actress said the Keaton was “supposed to just kind of fake hit me in the head.”

“She really hit me,” adding, “I don’t think I was supposed to take [the bat] away from her, and I did.”

Harden doesn’t blame Keaton for fully going at her saying she was “in awe” of her. ...  Read More
