NYRP: Help Celebrate East Harlem’s Puerto Rican Culture

Join NYRP at Los Amigos Community Garden in East Harlem on Sunday, September 5, to celebrate the area’s rich Puerto Rican culture. Featuring crafts, music, and refreshments, including:

Plenaluna performing plena music, a popular style of Puerto Rican folk music that chronicles the daily lives of people in the community.

Felipe Rangel teaching children how to make vejigante masks based on a character from the festive Puerto Rican Carnival tradition.

Francisco Torres demonstrating wood and gourd carving techniques as he carves santos, small devotional figures made for household worship since the 16th century.

The event will begin promptly at 2:00 p.m. at Los Amigos Community Garden, located at 326 Pleasant Avenue (between 117th and 118th Streets) in East Harlem. The nearest subway stop is 116th Street on the 6 train line. [Map]
