Queens and That Lot…London Politics

Polly and Mandy – the double act from hell

You know Tony Blair is in a desperate state when he has to rely on Peter Mandelson and Michael Portillo to champion his cause.

Portillo made Blair’s case for war in The Observer and Mandelson on Radio 4’s Start the Week. Both men appear to be having their own Bette Midler Moment – “That’s enough about me, let’s talk about you. What do you think of me?”

Portillo: “As we (the Prime Minister and I) come to terms with being 50, we get that feeling that a man’s got to do what a man’s got to do.”

Mandelson: “What makes me happy is my personal relationships. I like a partnership, having someone I can relate to and live with.”

Since when did it become okay to talk about Mandelson’s personal life on the BBC? The double act has fuelled rumours that the two are planning their television debut together.

I gather programmers are deeply concerned about how they would manage the clash of the egos, let alone the clash of the quiffs.
