Congrats to “Hairspray” and Company: 13 Tony Nominations

Good ‘Hairspray’ day
Musical scores 13 Tony nominations
By ROBERT HOFLER

The musical “Hairspray” grabbed a lucky 13 Tony Award nominations today. No surprise, the show’s biggest competition in the best-musical category turned out to be the Billy Joel tuner “Movin’ Out,” which took 10 noms. Revivals also filled many of the nom slots, with “Nine,” “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” and “La Boheme” each taking six or more.

John Lithgow and Melanie Griffith read the long list of 96 nominations at a press conference held at Sardi’s restaurant. Griffith, who is making her Broadway debut in “Chicago” this summer, had the unusual pleasure of reading off her husband’s name as one of the top nominees. Antonio Banderas was cited as best actor in a musical for his current star turn in “Nine.”

The awards ceremony takes place June 8 at Radio City Music Hall.

And the Nominees Are…
