Updated 11-30-2008: Diva Las Vegas CD/DVD Disappointment

Mister D: I found this to be true, too. Just got my copy. And while the audio CD is great, order of songs is a hatchet job….but at least I finally have a good CD copy. I would still buy it, but buyer beware….

Hi Mr. D:

I don’t know if anyone has written about this, but I received my Diva Las Vegas CD/DVD set today and I’m disappointed to say the write-up on Amazon.com is wrong. The DVD is not region 0 as listed on their product description. The package states it’s region 2/3/4/5/6. Therefore it is not playable on U.S. DVD players. I have two different DVD players and it is not compatible with either.

Wanted to let you know.

Thanks,

Ron

A Remedy From Katrin:

now, what’s the big deal?

I had to fight this damn regio problems too but in the other direction b/c us german DVD players can’t play the US regio 1. there are many ways to make it work.

1. burn a region free version to watch it
set your computer DVD drive to regio 2 (but just once) then burn yourself a regio-free version to watch it over and over again. burning software like “shrink” will let you burn regio free versions. don’t forget to switch your DVD drive’s regio-setting back to regio 1 after you finished the burning process.

2. use a special software tool
there are several tools out there to make your computer dvd drive play any regio you want as often as you want. Just make sure to start the software before you insert the DVD. I use “DVD Region-Free” and it works perfectly.

3. disable the regio-check of your computer (for advanced computer users)
a software like DVD Region Killer will disable the DVD regio-check when you insert the DVD. I heard about it but never tried it.

***A strong word of warning. If your unsure about any of the procedures I have mentioned here then please do not proceed ”¦ you can render your DVD drive useless.***

  1. Hi, Guys:

It’s possible to watch DVDs from any region in one’s computer. Just be aware that you can only re-set the dvd region on your computer a few times, after that your DVD player is locked virtually forever (there’s a way to make it region free, but I don’t know it).

Aside from that, there are all-regions or region free DVDs players on the market and, for people who collect films, it could be a good idea.

  2. Thank you Marcos….

Amanda: The CD is a live recording of the show…the track list is out of whack though…meaning it’s not in order….it’ like it’s backwards or something….BUT the sound is great.

The DVD is where people will have problems. Read Marcos’ post. There are other posts with ideas on how to bypass the region code thing wherever this CD/DVD thing is mentioned. Just use the search engine and then read the comments….

  3. When I first put in the DVD, my player froze and I had to unplug it, and then plug it back in again. Then, the disc was read (I had already changed my DVD parameters to Region 0), but went straight into Diva Las Vegas, instead of stopping at the main menu. Once I pressed the menu key on my DVD remote everything worked okay.

But…….although the CD sounds great, the DVD is a bit of a disappointment. It doesn’t have the high video transfer quality of most DVD’s (in fact, looks more like watching a videotape transfer than a higher resolution DVD), and the sound is so low I had turn the volume of the speakers up all the way to hear her sing. But, watch out, because if you keep your speakers turned up all the way, and then switch over to the main menu (without turning down the volume), the loudness will kick in, and blast you out of the house.

Although definitely a keeper for the price, it looks like the video transfer quality and inconsistent sound volume makes the DVD a bit of a head-scratcher. Plus, the random order of the songs on the CD makes no sense whatsoever. It doesn’t really look like a lot of effort went into this 2-disc package. However, it’s well worth the money just to have the live versions of many of these songs that we’ve never owned “live” before.

My favorite cut on the CD is “Do You Wanna Dance”, but it’s so hard to choose–everything Bette does is exceptional.
