The first season of this biting series from co-creator Ryan Murphy saw the return of Gwyneth Paltrow to acting, and now the second go-round sees two other celebrated actresses.
Netflix’s The Politician has revealed its release date for its second season, and with it comes some new images featuring comedy legends Bette Midler and Judith Light, who showed up in the first season’s finale.
The series, co-created by Murphy, Ian Brennan, and Paltrow’s husband Brad Falchuk, stars Ben Platt as an overachieving high school student from Santa Barbara with lofty political aspirations.
In the finale of season one, which debuted on the streamer on September 27 of last year, Platt’s character Payton met his match in the form of incumbent Senate Majority Leader Dede Standish (Light) who has chief of staff Hadassah Gold (Midler) by her side.
Light is a Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy nominee for her roles in Transparent, Ugly Betty as well as Murphy project American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, while Midler is a winner of both those awards for her work on TV and in film.
The Politician’s new promo images also show Gwyneth back in her role as Payton’s attention-getting mother Georgina.
Zoey Deutsch, Lucy Boynton, and Ryan Haddad also appear in the images for the second season, which will air on Netflix on June 19, which is less than a year after the first debuted in the fall.
Speaking to Collider about the new season, Murphy said they were ‘lucky’ to even have a second season, albeit a short one (seven or eight episodes).
‘Season 2, we were lucky enough that we finished filming and editing right before the coronavirus thing happened. We have seven. We finished all of our episodes,’ Murphy said.
‘We have a great second season and I think we’re trying to figure out how do we mix them now in the social distancing age. I think we’ve figured it out.
‘I’m really proud of it. I love what we came up with, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan and I,’ Murphy continued.
‘I love how Payton has grown up. He’s now in college, and the best thing about the season is the Ben Platt versus Bette Midler and Judith Light aspect. It feels very adult, it feels very topical.’
The Politician season 2 premieres on Netflix on Friday, June 19th.
