A little municipal history: in the old days, back in the 1970s, the East Village and the Bowery weren’t the hot places to be. They were, largely speaking, garbage-filled slums. This made a number of civic-minded individuals, notably Liz Christy, fairly unhappy, and so she and a group called the “Green Guerrillas” began to clean up the city. At least, they began to clean up one corner of it, renting the northeast corner of Bowery and Houston for a dollar a month from the city and turning it into a garden. Visitors now can appreciate the fruits (well, the vegetables and plants) of their labor. One final historical note: Giuliani wanted to sell the lots for cash for the city, but Bette Midler bought them in order to preserve them. Way to go, Bette. — Jeremy Dauber
