Cardinal Egan has confirmed that Sen. John Kerry’s abortion stance has endangered his chances of attending the 59th Alfred E. Smith Dinner in October.

We told you on Monday that organizers were weighing whether to bar the pro-choice Democrat from the feast, which drew both Gov. George W. Bush and Vice President Al Gore in 2000.

Archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling says he’s spoken to the cardinal, who is in Rome. “He said the question of inviting John Kerry has come up,” Zwilling tells us. “There have been discussions. But there’s no resolution about who will be invited.”

Meanwhile, the Kerry minstrel show continues to gain musical supporters: Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond are two of the headliners for an L.A. benefit on June 7. Three days later, Bette Midler, James Taylor and John Mellencamp will Kerry on in New York – probably at Radio City Music Hall, maybe even with Robin Williams serving as emcee.
