February 17, 2006 — ‘I VERY much doubt if anyone of us has the faintest idea of what is meant by the reality of existence of any thing but our own egos,” wrote the philosopher A. Eddington.
This brought to mind a recent comment made by my confreres on Page Six. Writing about Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler, the unidentified reporter placed this word after their names – “Dinosaurs!”
Well, yes, everybody over 50 is now in the dinosaur category. But this column is forever being bombarded with news and carryings-on in the energetic lives of people in the dino category. As Cole Porter would have put it, “fabulous doings in the ruins of old Pompeii!” But we’d have to add that the people “doing” are fabulous ruins in themselves.
