What began as a “pipe dream” sprouted yesterday into the city’s 250,000th newly planted tree, a Southern magnolia that took root in St. Albans, Queens, with the help of Mayor Bloomberg and Bette Midler, who spearheaded the drive for 1 million trees.
Midler recalled that when she first proposed adding a million trees here, “I didn’t really expect to be taken seriously.”
Asked about the David Letterman scandal, Bloomberg said, “If I’m awake at 11 o’clock at night, it’s not watching television.”
“My goodness,” chuckled Midler.
The mayor quickly added that he’d be working.
