LOS ANGELES – Actress Bette Midler will play Stella in the upcoming remake of the movie “Stella Dallas,” the story of a mother who sacrifices everything for her daughter.

The movie will be co-produced and distributed via a new partnership between the Samuel Goldwyn Co. and Walt Disney Studios, Daily Variety reported Thursday.

The first version of the tear-jerker was filmed in 1925, while a remake was produced in 1937 with Barbara Stanwyck and John Boles.

Ms. Midler has appeared in a steady string of hits, including “Outrageous Fortune,” “Ruthless People,” “Down and Out in Beverly Hills” and the just-released comedy “Big Business.”

  1. This picture took my breathe away. I forgot about it. Stella is one of her movies that I used to watch over and over as a kid but I haven’t watched it in over 10 years probably. I know it had it’s faults (the inconsistent accent for one) but it still packs a punch. The final scene is just as heartbreaking as the end of Beaches.

  2. it is not my favorite. but I did not hate it. ( ok, Im a sucker for the Barbara Stanwyck version) but I thought everyone did well , especially John Goodman. and I know a lot of people hated the end song but I loved it!!
