Last night was proof that the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards are right around the corner (September 23 to be exact!) when more than 20 Emmy nominees (everyone from Maya Rudolph to Zooey Deschanel) showed up to honor one another at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City. Was Sofia Vergara wearing her engagement ring? How’s Mayim Bialik feeling after her scary car accident? I have all the answers and more!

Lily Tomlin, who is honoring her dear friend, the late Kathryn Joosten (Desperate Housewives’ Karen McCluskey) by serving out Kathryn’s term as the Academy’s Performer Peer Group co-Governor, was elated to be celebrating such amazing talent. An incredible talent herself, I asked Tomlin if she could pick a favorite character of hers over the years. Her response? “It’s like Mrs. Duggar with those 19 children! She’s not going to have a favorite either.”

One of my favorite Lily Tomlin movies is Big Business with Bette Midler! “I loved working with Bette; it was such great fun. When I finished that movie, Bette made a plaque for me that said I graduated from the Bette Midler Institute of Mugging! Because Bette can mug, and she moves her face in three different directions!” By the way, you’ll be able to see more of Tomlin this fall–she co-stars with Reba on ABC’s new sitcom, Malibu Country.

All of the Modern Family adults (minus Ed O’Neill) were in attendance to celebrate their supporting actor and actress in a comedy series nominations. Ty Burrell, who is one of the nicest guys in Hollywood, immediately greeted me with a hug and asked about my parents. (He met them during our set visit back in March). Ty, who is a huge St. Louis Rams fan (going back to the days that the team was in Los Angeles), was happy that they had a good pre-season game this past weekend, even if it was against Eric Stonestreet’s Kansas City Chiefs. Ty and I had a candid conversation about how he almost gave up acting, plus, what’s to come on Modern Family this season, so stay tuned for that in the coming days!

Meanwhile, Sofia Vergara made a stunning appearance in figure-hugging black mini-dress. She attended with rumored fiance, Nick Loeb, and the happy couple were by each other’s side all night. As for that humongous possible engagement ring? Well, it was on full display and as sparkly and stunning as you could imagine.

The best sport of the night goes to Mayim Bialik, who has resumed all work commitments after her scary car accident last week that left her hand severely injured. As for the pain? “Well, I had two kids with no drugs, so I can do pain,” she admitted. (Can you even imagine?)

As for being back on the set of The Big Bang Theory so soon after, “People are being very kind to me, and we have a very loving crew and staff. Melissa Rauch and Jim Parsons are really two of the reasons I went back to work after my surgery. They’re wonderful.”

One of the cutest moments during our interview happened when Mayim spotted Zooey Deschanel making her way onto the red carpet. “Oh my God, it’s Zooey Deschanel!! I don’t think she knows who I am, but I’m obsessed with her!” she gushed.
