If Jennifer Lawrence says it, assume it’s a joke. Or a quote from a movie. Or, in this case, both.
When JLaw won her Golden Globe Award for Silver Linings Playbook, she looked at the statue and said, “What does it say? I beat Meryl!” It was just a funny quip, and on The Late Show with David Letterman she said it was a Bette Midler line from The First Wives Club – and she was surprised no one else had used it before.
“I had no idea Lindsay Lohan would take it to the Twitterverse,” Jennifer told Dave, referencing Lindsay’s Sunday night tweet: “Words cannot express how much I LOVE Kristen Wiig. And no1 should ever mess with a legend, such as Meryl Streep.”

The Internet picked it up, some people misunderstood, and then it was like Jennifer had dissed the most decorated thespian of our time.
“I was like, is that what this turned into? I don’t like Meryl Streep?” Jennifer said. “As if, like, I’ve had my eyes on getting that girl forever. And I was like ‘Finally, I knew it would happen some day!'” She’s not sure if she even wants to hear from Meryl Streep, but she figures Meryl doesn’t care.
“What about these dopes that don’t get the joke?” Dave asked.
“I wanted to make a public statement,” Jennifer said, “like ‘Hey, idiots, it’s a quote from a movie. And it’s Meryl Streep!” Guess that’s her public statement!

I’m glad someone finally did that too! EPIC Bette moment!
This seriously makes me LOVE Jennifer Lawrence.
Me too! xx
I saw Jennifer Lawrence on Letterman last night ans she was quick with a sharp answer to every question, way ahead of Dave, she was funny, witty and articulate and seemed very intelligent. So young and so smart, she should have a long career ahead of her. I like her more already!
I agree Albert! xx
As soon as she said that line I laughed my ass off. No one else understood why I laughed. I told them it was a Bette line from a movie and this is what I got “of course you would know that”
well, apparently im not the only one! :p
I have always like Jennifer and after the other night, I like her even more.
im sure Meryl got a kick out of it…I want to see something she said about it, maybe people would get off Jen’s back!
Maybe Meryl will after she gets over the flu! xx
I was trying to find out what was all the hoopla about this new actress Jennifer Lawrence for she didn’t impress me in anything I had seen with her in the past, like X-Men: First Class. But after this Midler quote, I’ll give her a shot.
She’s great in Silver Linings Playbook
