A SAFe BETTE: The news that Bette Midler has been signed to star in “Two on the Seesaw,” a film based on the Broadway
musical “Seesaw,” came as a bit of a surprise to composer Cy Coleman. Coleman, who most recently composed the music for “I Love My Wife,” did the music for “Seesaw,” which will be heard again in the movie. It was Coleman’s hope to star Midler in the Broadway show, but the singer declined Coleman’s invitation. This time it was director Michael Bennett who persuaded Midler to take on the film project. The movie is reportedly going to try to be more commercially oriented than the Broadway show, which drew critical raves but made little money when it ran four years ago.
