Mister D: Not exactly an in depth analysis, but Liz was there. Come on Liz–you could have written this without even attending…we want more substance!!!!
The slushy icy weekend topped itself off with the Mike Nichols production of “Short Talks on the Universe,” a benefit that featured some of America’s best writers and actors. Matthew Broderick, dressed as the devil, and Tony Roberts as a B’way producer, were my two favorites in hell, as envisioned by playwright Jon Robin Baitz. I also adored Tony Kushner raving on as himself, explaining why he couldn’t contribute to the evening. Then there was the one and only Bette Midler performing Nora Ephron’s “I Hate My Purse,” plus Alec Baldwin and Ellen Barkin in a windup of two lost souls at a cocktail party, dreamed up by Elaine May. Christine Baranski and Kevin Kline scored as a couple in bed, with Steve Martin having provided the ridiculous dialogue. Later, in the Sherry-Netherland’s Cipriani, which seems to be one of the only NYC places open on a Sunday night, I met Bono, who was with Bobby Shriver. Andy Stein was having dinner there with the beautiful Peggy Lipton, who looks as good as in the days when she was Mrs. Quincy Jones. Ron Perelman had Ms. Moore and his wife, Ms. Barkin in tow. But the star of the room was Charlie Rose, who dined between two glamour-pusses, Barbara Walters and Lauren Bacall. He said to me that he was having one of his all-time fantasies. Oh, that Charlie!
