Birthday girl: Veteran celeb columnist Liz Smith celebrated her 80th birthday Sunday in Manhattan with Bette Midler, Liza Minnelli and Tommy Tune singing at a party at Le Cirque restaurant. Former Texas governor Ann Richards emceed; guests included Barbara Walters, Mike Wallace, Peter Jennings, Walter Cronkite and directors Joel Schumacher and Mike Nichols.

What’s the secret of gossip queen Liz Smith’s longevity? Thought to be the highest-paid print journalist in the world, she’s got about a million things a year to live for.
The Fort Worth native turned 80 on Sunday, and all of New York’s boldfaced names turned out at her regular hangout, Le Cirque, for a big bash where they got a genuine taste of Texas. That taste came compliments of Liz’s close pal, former Texas Gov. Ann Richards, who turned up the volume on her twang to emcee the evening. Fellow Texan and nine-time Tony Award winner Tommy Tune was one among many who lined up to serenade Liz. Bette Midler and Liza Minnelli also sang.
