The credit for Ferrera being where she is today, she says, goes to Bette Midler, whose performance in the 1993 television movie of Gypsy inspired her to act. “I wanted to be Bette Midler when I grew up. It’s not about being her,” Ferrera clarifies. “It’s about being myself the way Bette Midler unapologetically has been herself.”
