THE GRAMMY 2003 HOPEFULS

What? Grammy talk in September?
Why not? The eligibility period for Grammy 2003 consideration ends in
just a few days.
Maybe it’s me, but during the eligibility period of October 1, 2002 and
September 30, 2003, it seems that there has been a distinct lack of not
just nominees, but quality nominees. If this trend continues, we might as
well do away with the charade of the Grammys (which supposedly honors
achievement and quality) and focus attention instead on the American
Music Awards (which acknowledges popularity and which split off from the
Grammys back in the ’70s precisely over this issue).
There is, however, a small handful of powerhouse product due in record
stores during the month of September – everyone from Sting, Gloria
Estefan and Aretha Franklin to Dido, Bette Midler, Dave Matthews – that
promises potential award grabbing when the 2003 Grammy nominees are
announced in January.
Here are my predictions for those new releases from October 1, 2002,
through September 30, 2003, that will probably make it to the final slate
of nominees come this January:
Best Traditional Pop Album Category: It doesn’t matter who else is
nominated, but two superstar productions will dominate this category:
Tony Bennett and k.d. lang’s “A Wonderful World” vs. Bette Midler’s
“Bette Midler Sings the Rosemary Clooney Songbook.”
