She rattles off her role models: Aretha, Patti LaBelle, Bette Midler, Josephine Baker. “Legends are different,” she says. “You didn’t see a million black girls running around wearing banana skirts,” like Baker, the “Black Pearl,” did when she captivated Paris in the 1920s.
“I feel good that I’m different, that I don’t look the way most stars look,” Davis says. “I know God didn’t give me all of this for nothing.”
