O’Donnell on Fame, Producing, Kids, and a Little Bette

“Look, I’ve put that ego outside because I’m now not the flower. A producer’s a gardener making that flower grow. In truth, I did need to make some adjustments because your ego gets inflated and the adulation is addictive. Some people take a drink and become alcoholics. Fame’s toxic. At times it felt like I was pushing a rock with my head when, for instance, I’d go to Bette Midler’s ball instead of something my kids needed me for. Yeah, there were times I found it hard to maintain a grounding.

“I’ve had enough success to last a lifetime. I’ve been in everyone’s good graces for so long that I guess I just have to get ready for some garbage cans.”
